Psychophysiological Disorders are physical problems that are often made worse by stress, anxiety and depression. Examples include asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, headache, hypertension, back pain, headache and fibromyalgia.

Because psychophysiological problems are not well understood by medical science, physicians often blame the sufferers by saying the problem is “in their heads.” This is certainly not true as all these disorders have a physical cause. However, there is a lot of research that shows that psychological factors can have a significant impact on the severity and frequency of these disorders and on the suffering they cause. Many people are able to reduce or eliminate the use of medication and report a marked decrease in frequency of attacks and improvement in life quality after behavioral and psychological intervention.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, hypnosis or combinations of these approaches have all shown efficacy in alleviating the distress caused by these disorders.
